What is the best over the counter sleep aids?

I bought these pills called Rapid Sleep Pm from Wal Mart and I tell you, they are terrible!!! Don’t ever buy these pills.

There is this stuff called Melatonin. It's nice because you basically take it, lay down, and you will gradually drift into sleep.

It doesn't just knock you out. lol.





Important Information On Insomnia Sleeping Disorder

If a person finds that they have an inability to sleep or are unable to sleep for a reasonable period of time then they are considered to have insomnia. People who suffer from insomnia sleeping disorder typically complain of being unable to close their eyes or even rest for more than a few minutes at a time. Some typical causes of insomnia sleeping disorder are considered to be fear, stress, anxiety, medications, herbs, caffeine or any combination of these.

Insomnia sleeping disorders are three different types including: transient, acute and chronic. Insomnia which occurs anywhere from one night to a few weeks is considered the transient form of insomnia. Acute insomnia occurs when a person has an inability to sleep well for a period of three weeks to six months. When insomnia persists almost nightly for a month or longer then it is considered chronic insomnia Soundsleeping Disorder.

Common Causes

A number of causes are believed to cause insomnia. However, two of the most frequent causes are sleep apnea and parasomnia. Sleep apnea in a condition that occurs when a person’s breathing is interrupted. Typically this form of apnea is related to a cerebral vascular obstruction, congestive heart failure, premature aging and circadian rhythm sleep disorders which cause insomnia during the night and sometimes excessive sleepiness during the daytime.

A number of disorders are included in persona including nightmares, sleep walking, violent behavior while sleeping and REM behavior disorder. Repeated awakenings during the night can be caused by certain unpleasant sensations resulting from stomach acid flowing upward into the throat during sleep with gastro esophageal reflux disease. Those with bipolar disorder can have mania or hypermania which can cause difficulty in a person who is trying to fall asleep

Depending on the type of insomnia you suffer from the treatment options will vary.Sleeping tablets and other forms of sedatives are typically relied on by insomniacs to help them sleep peacefully at night. Temazepam, diazepam, lorazepam, nitrazepam and midazolam are some of the most commonly used medications. Antidepressant medications such as mirtazaphine, trazodone and doxepin are also considered to help the sleep process. Sleeping problems in the elderly may involve a number of factors such as: decreased energy output as a result of retirement,the age of the person, their state of health, and any prescription drugs they may be taking for health problems.

Illness disrupts sleeping patterns in the elderly, and may result in increased awakenings due to physical discomfort, caused by urinary urgency,cramps, angina, chronic obstructive airways disease, and left ventricular failure, these may be some of the many illnesses which cause sleeping problems in the elderly.

An elderly person may become very anxious about a change in their sleeping pattern, however, it will be necessary to thoroughly investigate the problem in order to ascertain if this perceived sleeping problem, causes dysfunction in their waking activities. If the elderly person has a carer, or lives with family then the problem may be easier to assess, for what appears to be a problem may only be a normal change in sleeping pattern for the age.

The most frequently occurring sleeping problem in the elderly is sleep latency, the person may spend some hours in bed before sleep occurs. The elderly person may view this as a problem and request sleeping pills, whereas, all that is needed is to teach them how to reorganize their lives to cope with the changes in sleeping patterns they are experiencing.

Reduced energy output as a result of retirement with an increased opportunity to take naps, either as a result of boredom or just plain exhaustion, may contribute to reduced quality of night-time sleep.

The pressure of a normal working day has been taken away, so the energy output is considerably less, while this may be offered as a possible reason for sleep latency, many others factors may be involved.

There may be much confusion about sleep latency, the difficulty may be exaggerated because the person who experiences it may be convinced that unless they have 8 hours of quality sleep, they will become ill. Sometimes it is difficult to convince an elderly person that they no longer require 8 hours of unbroken sleep, but may be better served by a shorter night time sleep supplemented with day time naps.

So how can sleeping problems in the elderly be resolved? Firstly it is necessary to provide a warm comfortable noise free environment, if this is available then the addition of regular exercise, combined with a healthy diet may be all that is needed to resolve the sleeping problem. However, if the previous measures fail to help, many other modalities are available to help the person .

Reflexology offers a very gentle and effective aid to sleep , and aromatherapy has proven to be very successful to assist relaxation and sleep in the elderly. Both of these modalities have been used in nursing homes and have been found to assist not only sleep, but the general well-being of the patients.

Sleeping problems in the elderly should be thoroughly investigated before any medications are prescribed. Unfortunately this is not always the procedure that is adopted, for often a script is written for what has been described as insomnia by the elderly person, however, such is mostly not the case, but rather it’s a normal progression or a resetting of the circadian rhythms as people age which requires education, not medication.

Provided that there is no evidence of disease of the central nervous system, such as dementia, Parkinson’s disease, post-traumatic brain damage, and chronic pain, then sleeping problems in the elderly are far better managed conservatively.

In todayâ??s world of high tech medicine you would think that getting a good nights sleep would be the easiest thing in the world, but rarely is that the case many people have a hard time drifting off to sleep while others seem to zone out when their head hits the pillow they are the lucky ones. First off you really need to watch what you consume not only just prior going to bed but even what you had for lunch can affect some people. Believe it or not the effects of caffeine may stay in your body for up to twelve hours, which is a little ironic that coke or cup of coffee that keeps you going in the middle of the afternoon may well be what is keeping you up at night causing you to be tired needing that caffeine in the afternoon it is a vicious cycle you may want to try and stay away from caffeinated drinks after lunch to try and see if you can fall asleep faster.

The atmosphere of your bedroom also can hinder your ability to get a restful night sleep. If at all possible do not have your home office in your bedroom it is a good idea to limit your bedroom for sleep. Keeping the computer and television out of the bedroom will help limit distractions and after awhile you will get accustomed to the fact that this room is for sleeping not thinking about work or what you have to do tommorrow.

That last cigarette or that smoking that good cigar prior to going to bed will also have and adverse effect on your ability to fall asleep and having a glass of wine or other alcoholic drink can have a negative effect even though alcohol is a depressant in a few hour the alcohol can cause you to wake up and toss and turn in the night.

So what does work well some foods and drinks can help you fall asleep faster the food that help contain L-tryptophan which is an amino acid that most doctors believe helps with sleep milk is one good source of L-tryptophan so maybe warm milk is a good idea. Other foods that contain tryptophan are poultry such as chicken and especially turkey so a great bedtime snack would be a turkey sandwich and a glass of milk give it a try it may work for you.

One aspect of waking up feeling refreshed is actually sleeping through the night. Try to eliminate as many obstacles that stand in the way of sleeping soundly does your dog or cat feel the need to share the bed with you? Do they wake you up during the night? If so you may want to train them to sleep someplace else. Donâ??t set the alarm extra early just so you can hit the snooze button it is far better to sleep for a longer period than in short cat naps.
