dependence is the problem with a lot of those sleep aids, be careful and try not taking them for a few days to see if you can sleep without them.

I would try a melatonin supplement, its a hormone your body already produces but the problem with people that can't sleep, their not producing enough melatonin to fall asleep. So adding more melatonin along with what your body produces helps you fall asleep and stay asleep and the best thing about this stuff is you don't become dependent, once your body gets back on the right clock you can stop taking it. here's a link to the stuff I purchased mine from http://melatoninsleepaidreview.com
References :
In replacement of the sleep aid pills, you should use chamomille tea which is very safe, child safe (watch the dosage though) to put you into a restful slumber. This restful slumber will ensure you're able to awake in the morning. if you would be taking the caffeine pills to stay up I would recommend you switch to some natural vitamins.
You can try researching Multiple Essentials from Applied Pro Line. Works excellent for endurance and u could also check out drinkyourvitamins.com. I'm a final year uni student, so I have to up all hours and must get proper work done. I use a combination of natural vitamins which helps me throughout day and night and any time I feel to sleep I can sleep with no issues and if i'm a bit restless, i use chamomille which i was using since 11.

And the greatest thing about these natural solutions, no addiction.
Also some other tips to alleviate poor sleep:
1. no cellphone, computer for at least 1 to 1/2 hour before bed. your body needs to relieve itself of the static
2. No sugary stuff- our bodies get energy from those things

hope this helps
References :
drinkyourvitamins.com, personal usage,my mom

Diphenhydramine is the most common OTC sleep aid medication - its sold under dozens of brand names, but you most likely know it better as Benedryl - the allergy medication....its an antihistamine.

And people have been known to take it daily for years....
References :
Nothing other than being dependant on them.
But they generally don't do harm to your body or anything like that.
But you'll always need them to sleep.
If you're ok with that then it's fine taking them long term.
References :
I've taken melatonin every night for about a year.
